The U.N. International Day of Peace ("Peace Day") is observed around the world each year on  September 21. Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace.

In the spirit of Peace Day, the Global Prosperity and Peace Initiative (GPPI) in Los Angeles is hosting a luncheon, Ambassadors of Peace, to honor local peacemakers and community leaders. The luncheon program has been developed by Mame Toucouleur MBaye, a GPPI National Peace Ambassador for Senegal and the United States, and Honorary Consul of Senegal in Los Angeles, working in collaboration with the CSC Art Gallery. Rev. Carolyn Wilkins will be the Program Emcee; she is an empowerment coach and the founder of PEACENET which provides training in forgiveness, dignity and respect, and principles of peace and nonviolence.

The U.N. theme for 2017, Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All, promotes a global initiative to honor everyone forced to flee their homes in search of a better life. Organizations from the 193 Member States of the United Nations, the private sector, civil society, academic institutions and individual citizens participate with programs which support diversity, non-discrimination and acceptance of refugees and migrants.

The Global Peace and Prosperity Initiative (GPPI) luncheon will highlight solidarity in peace with refugees, migrants and host cities, and showcase the shared benefits of migration to economies and nations. We envision a world where peace and prosperity prevail, equitable and sustainable development takes place, and dignities and human rights are respected and fully enjoyed. During the Summit, we will educate, celebrate progress and establish goals for our vision in Los Angeles. Ultimately, it will be about bringing people together and reminding them of their common humanity.

The Day will highlight solidarity with refugees and migrants and showcase the shared benefits of migration to economies and nations, while also acknowledging legitimate concerns of host communities. Ultimately, it will be about bringing people together and reminding them of their common humanity.
