Women in Management (WIM) HSC Speaker Series: Local to Global Community Capacity Building

This past Tuesday,  The USC WIM Speaker Series, organized by Jennifer Severa,  presented an interactive talk, Local to Global Community Capacity Building,  by Director of the USC Institute for Genetic Medicine Art Gallery, Lynn Crandall.  In her introduction, WIM President, Stacy Patterson, Program Manager for Media Arts + Practice, the newest Division of the USC School of Cinematic Arts, identified the dynamic and progressive WIM members,  employed in a diversity of positions, departments, and Schools at USC as professionals whose involvement within this academic community covers a broad spectrum of roles: advisors, administrative staff, department directors, managers, faculty, associate vice presidents, and deans.  Patterson recognized the same spirit in the IGM Art Gallery’s mission to serve as an incubator for social capital.                               Photos by Jill Miller

Jennifer Severa introduced Lynn Crandall, as serving on the Board Directors of artAngels.org and on the LA/Nagoya Sister City Association Art Committee, as well as retired Board Director: SoCal Sister Cities International; LA Municipal Art Gallery Association; Inner City Arts; The JAMMIN Foundation; Magic Visions and The Society for the Arts in Healthcare’s International Membership Committee.

Crandall’s Board Adviser positions include: The Okra Restaurant Group, Inc; The Decision Platform; Save America’s Children and ENCOUNTERLA.  A State of California, Master Teacher, Crandall served as Adviser to Garfield High School ’s Green Architecture Design and Global Studies Academies and organized international programs, art exhibitions and Career Day presentations at Lincoln, Roosevelt and Sacred Heart High Schools, all adjacent to the HSC.

Her students at Julia Richman High School in New York City won 2nd in the state, high school division, Martin Luther King, Jr. Second Annual Arts & Sciences Living the Dream Statewide Contest. As Director of the Riordan Leadership Development Program at the LA Junior
Chamber of Commerce, Crandall was awarded Outstanding Program Director; EarthFest LA and California Greenworks awarded her for leading the Steering committee of the 2013 Festival; She chaired the Los Angeles City Council on Aging’s Arts and Entertainment Committee; was Second Annual LA ARTCORE benefit, Journey into Art, honoree and Music Week’s benefit, An Investment of Unity, honoree. She was an La Business Journal Nonprofit & Corporate Citizenship nominee and served as National Tour Curator at The New Museum of Contemporary
Art in New York City.  As Board Member of the Los Angeles League of Women Voters, she served as Editor of their LWVLA VOTER for over two years.

From President Obama Lynn received the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for her years of commitment to build a stronger nation through volunteer service  President Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton designated Lynn LA Millennium Community Coordinator for the Honor the Past-Imagine the Future celebration.

For this WIM  interactive talk, Crandall invited Terry Krueger, LA Facilitator of Pachamama Alliance and Lael Belove, LA Chapter Coordinator, Poems for Peace,  to speak on the power of collaboration to generate a whole far greater than the sum of the parts.  IGM Art Gallery Artist in Residence, Susan Hillbrand, told of her collaboration with IGM Scientist Cheryl Craft to create a Spiritual Matrices Penlight Performance and Shar McBee introduced her bestseller books: To Lead is to Serve and Joy of Leadership. Shar has raised millions of dollars for charity, volunteered in over a dozen countries,and taught her servant leadership method to 200,000 people worldwide.  Crandall and Patterson outlined a number of ways that WIM and IGM AG can work together to share and leverage existing resources of both organizations and their partners to develop and sustain our sacred duty to bequeath to future generations an institution even better than the one we’re working in today.

“The possible connections and the variety of efforts in the room were inspiring. Several people said they were walking out feeling encouraged and happy!” smiled Stacy Patterson at the close of the event.
