On Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences (CPNAS) Evening Rendezvous series presented a forum entitled, Brain Science and the Cyborg: Fact, History, and Possibilities.
Panelists were:
Gary Carrion-Murayari, co-curator of Ghosts in the Machine, New Museum, NYC;
James Giordano, neuroscientist and neuroethicist, Director, Center for Neurotechnology Studies,
Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, Arlington, VA; Monica Lopez-Gonzalez, musician, photographer, postdoc fellow, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and adjunct faculty, Visual Cognitive Neuroscience, Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore; Jonathan Peck, futurist and director, Institute for Alternative Futures, Alexandria, VA.
Lynn Crandall, Director, USC Institute for Genetic Medicine Art Gallery and LA/Nagoya Sister Cities Affiliation Board Member, Dr. Edward Crandall, Chair, USC Keck School of Medicine, Department of Medicine and Dr. Sara Wedeman, Behavioral Economics, LLC, attended, representing voices from Los Angeles and Philadelphia, respectively.
The following day, Dr. Wedeman and Lynn Crandall visited staff at Sister Cities International and The Global Alliance for Arts and Health. The following day, Lynn presented documentation of the visits at the LA/Nagoya Sister City Affiliation monthly meeting. A week later, a delegation of LANSCA and Rotary members visited in Nagoya. The delegation, among other accomplishments, forged a youth arts and health exchange that the Rotary Club will spearhead for youth in LA and Nagoya to share posters they create to demonstrate the positive effects of healthy nutrition and exercise choices.
On a second trip to D.C., Lynn Crandall visited staff at the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute to share with them the work being done at USC by USC undergrad leaders. Pamela Ascon, Co-Chair of the USC IGM Art Gallery Internship Program applied for a CHLI Scholarship and on December 19, was informed she’d received one of 4 scholarships offered students across the nation for 2013.
The USC IGM Art Gallery and its partners have also submitted to the Global Alliance Arch of Arts Conference in Haifa, Israel, an abstract for a virtual presentation of their work to build community capacity through arts and health collaborations on the local, national and global levels.
